Son Nguyen was born in Saigon, Vietnam in 1978. His family migrated to Atlanta, Georgia in 1981. Son's formative years were spent both inside and outside of a unique environment where he witnessed firsthand the contrasts and sociocultural dynamics of a historically Black-White south paradigm; oftentimes falling into the "other" category of a deeply rooted racial and ethnic divide. Within that construct, his philosophical, as well as future academic pedagogy would begin to mold subconsciously. His perspective and approach on history today is a direct result of his childhood experiences in the deep south and growing up in Southern California.
His family subsequently moved Westward. He has lived in Southern California since 1988. Son graduated from Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, CA) and moved on to pursue his undergraduate and graduate degree in History with a specialization in Asia from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. His academic career has entailed teaching at both the high school and college levels since 2004.
He is currently a member of the History Department within the Social Sciences Division at Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington, California were he has taught since 2010. He teaches Asian, Asian-American, U.S., and World History. Son is the moderator for the L.A. Historical Union, APIC (Asian and Pacific Islander Club), Co-Moderator for CREANDO un Nuevo Futuro, Co-Moderator for Latin@ Student Union, and assists with the Black Student Union. He thoroughly enjoys Harbor College, especially the diverse students he interacts with on a daily basis as well as the great faculty and staff.
After finishing his Graduate degree, Son embarked on a journey with one end goal in mind: to make a positive impact in at least one person's life every single day he walks this Earth; one day at a time, one good deed at a time. Son states, "every single day I try to live life to the fullest and make it a point to do or say at least one good/positive thing." One of his two most significant quotes come from the late John Wooden who once said, "you cannot live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."
According to Son, "life is short and there is far too much hatred, despair, negativity, and wretchedness in this world." Son asks, "why add to this misery with further negativity? I truly believe that if one surround themselves with positive people, positive things, and a positive environment, they will begin to reflect that environment. It's that simple!"
